An Introduction to Wuhan College

History:Wuhan College was originally started as Wuhan College affiliated to Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, as approved by the Ministry of Education of China. In 2012, the college was authorized to confer bachelor’s degree. In 2015, Wuhan College became independent as a private university providing undergraduate education by the approval of the Ministry. In 2023,Wuhan College successfully passed the Undergraduate Teaching Qualification Assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education of China.

Non-profit:Wuhan College is run by Wuhan Yidan Educational, Scientific and Cultural Development Co., Ltd. as a non-profit entity. Mr. CHEN Yidan, founder of the college as well as one of the major co-founders of Tencent Group, does not claim any return from this college by his investment. He has invested more than 2 billion yuan to build a new campus for the college and all tuitions collected are used for university development and student education. In 2016, Hubei Yidan University Education Development Foundation was established and has totally provided 201 million yuan to sustain the construction and development of the college. Apart from national scholarship and assistantship, the college offers its own scholarships every year, including some from social donations, such as CHEN Yidan Teaching Scholarship, Songhai Scholarship, Huazhi Scholarship, Tencent Scholarship, Grant Thornton Scholarship. These have added up to a total amount of 111 million yuan since 2019.

Campus:Wuhan College, located at No. 333, Huangjiahu Avenue, Jiangxia District, Wuhan, is surrounded by the lake with a sailing education center on the water. The campus is adjacent to the Military World Games Village, and Metro Line No.8 has a stop at the East Gate of Wuhan College. The planning and design of the campus was led by Prof. HE Jingtang, a Chinese Architectural Design Master and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The complex is organically integrated with the natural environment of Huangjiahu Lake. The space and layout are open and diversified, with unique style and grandeur. The Mr. and Mrs. Chen Yidan Library, Ma Huateng Academic Complex, Penguin Square, Confidants Academic Complex, Chenye Lab Complex, Virtus Inspire Lab Complex are all endorsed landmarks of social charity donation—highlight the institution's strong ties with social welfare initiatives.

Disciplines:At present, Wuhan College consists of 8 schools and 1 division, namely the School of Accounting, the School of Finance and Economics, the School of Management, the School of Information Engineering, the School of Law, the School of Arts and Media, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Marxism, and the Division of Liberal Education. The college has 36 undergraduate majors, covering 8 disciplines. Economics, management and law are traditional strength inherited from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. Engineering (information technology) is distinctive by blending the elements of Tencent Group. And literature, arts, education and sciences are well combined and developed with aforementioned disciplines. Since 2015 as an independent entity, Wuhan College has been authorized to provide 2 undergraduate programs beyond the listed majors-- supply chain management and cross-boarder e-commerce. Both are the very first such programs among all universities in China. And the supply chain management is designated as a pilot program for New Liberal Arts construction by the Steering Committee on Teaching of the Ministry of Education. Now Wuhan College has 1 national first-class undergraduate course, 1 provincial strong and distinctive discipline (group), 8 undergraduate majors under construction for provincial first-class majors, 23 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 2 provincial teaching teams, 7 provincial excellent grass-root teaching organizations and 2 provincial teaching achievement award. At the same time, there are 82 collaborative education projects between industry and college granted by the Ministry of Education, 2 “Jingchu Excellent Talents” collaborative education projects, 51 provincial research projects on education and teaching, and the Provincial Demonstration Center of Teaching & Research for Curriculum Ideology and Politics.

Resources:The faculty at Wuhan College is over 900 teachers(full-time & part-time)，whom are well-experienced and of high qualities. Among them, there are 42% teachers with senior titles, 95.3% teachers with master's or Ph.D degrees（19.6%）, 2 experts enjoying special allowance from state council,2 teaching masters of state level,Four faculty members were selected for provincial talent programs,besides,more than 20 chief executives and leading experts of famous enterprises both domestic and abroad have been awarded professor of practice by the university. Wuhan College has a total area of 964.53 mu (about 64.3 hectares) with 393,600 square meters of school buildings, various teaching and research equipment worthy of 100.9495 million yuan,1.63 million volumes of paper books, 22.5Gbps export bandwidth for campus network, 87 on-campus labs and training rooms, and 174 off-campus internship and training bases.

Education:The total number of students at Wuhan College is equivalent to 15,343, including 13,399 full-time undergraduate students.The university implements the"One Core, Two Integrations, Eight Collaborations"talent cultivation reform model to develop high-quality application-oriented professionals. It promotes collaboration between industry and college by cooperating with major companies like Tencent, Huawei, JD.com, Chinasoft International and Dachu Network etc. It works with British professional associations to implement dual certificate education programs awarding both academic certificate and professional/qualification certificate to students.Wuhan College has partnered with Chinasoft International to establish the Internet Industry College, with Newtouch Technology to co-build the Digital Intelligence Finance Industry College, and with the Chinese Sailing Association to jointly establish the China Sailing Industry Talent Training Center, all dedicated to cultivating high-quality applied professionals. The teaching quality of its specialized courses has been highly recognized by professional associations, with the number of exempted professional qualification courses ranking among the highest in comparable specialized programs nationwide. The university establishes 4 undergraduate programs featuring accounting, financial management, software engineering and network engineering. Since 2016, Wuhan College has been approved to recruit students at tie-one level (the only one private university in Hubei Province).It has introduced three new specialized programs: Financial Management (Digital Intelligence Finance Experimental Class), Software Engineering (Chinasoft Outstanding Engineer Class), and Social Sports Instruction and Management (Chinese Sailing Association Sailing Specialized Class). Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business hosts Cheng Kong Free Public Lecture, which regularly invites well-known entrepreneurs, professionals and scholars to give lectures to all teachers and students. Tencent Maker Space settled on campus is accredited as a National Service Space for Innovators by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. Wuhan College is certified as an Entrepreneurship Demonstration Base for College Students in Hubei Province by the Provincial Department of Education to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. Since 2022, the students have won 2213 national and provincial awards in various competitions of discipline, arts and sports. It has gained 30 national projects and 90 provincial projects in the College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program.

Research:Since 2019, Wuhan College has obtained 200 government-supported research projects at provincial and ministerial levels or above, among them, there are1 project from the National Natural Science Foundation,2 projects from the National Social Science Fund，1 project from the National Arts Fund,3 projects from the Ministry of Education's Humanities and Social Sciences Program, additionally, it has successfully completed 1 National Social Science Fund project. Key academic achievements include: published nearly 300 papers in core journals, authored 45 academic monographs,obtained 31 national patents, registered 75 software copyrights, conducted over 500 horizontal research projects. Besides, it has established 8 provincial-level scientific research innovation teams, founded 1 Hubei Provincial Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences in Higher Education, received 3 Government Development Research Awards, awarded 2 Outstanding Social Science Achievement Awards by the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee and Government, and 11 research outcomes receive affirmative endorsements from provincial-level leaders.

International:Wuhan College has set up an ACA Accounting Class jointly with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and a CIMA Financial Management Class in cooperation with the Royal Institute of Chartered Management Accountants. More than 10 well-known universities such as Cambridge University in the UK and Stellenbosch University in South Africa have established cooperative relations with Wuhan College. Since 2018, it has sponsored 240 exchange students by covering all cost. 289 students went abroad for advanced study, 80% of whom entered the world's top 200 universities (QS/THE).The university offers numerous international exchange programs for students and faculties，such as, series programs with the University of Cambridge（including the Cambridge Visiting Program, Online Lecture and Wuhan College X Cambridge Global Learning and Engagement Workshop)，various international exchange opportunities of summer school programs at the University of Oxford, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Tencent Elite Class international exchange program，summer visiting program at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, and overseas training and exchange programs for faculties. To support international education aspirations, the university provides dedicated overseas study support services. Starting from the freshman year, it offers comprehensive assistance to students aiming for further education abroad, including connections with international institutions, personalized counseling, and language training,etc,. These services help students design individualized international development pathways and expand their opportunities for further education and career advancement. Wuhan College is endorsed to provide degree programs to international students and accumulatively has trained nearly a hundred students from 12 countries in the Belt and Road Initiative, such as Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Ethiopia.

Reputation:Since 2019, Wuhan College has received 213 million yuan of social donation. The quality of students and employment rate top peer institutions in Hubei Province. In 2024, the application baselines for physics-preferred and history-preferred majors rank both the 2nd among peer institutions in Hubei Province. For 3 consecutive years since 2022, the initial employment rate has been 88.70%, 89.47% and 90.76% respectively, all higher than average level in Hubei Province. According to third-party's research, the overall satisfaction of graduates, parents and employers with the college is above 90%. In the past three years, mainstream media such as People's Daily, Guangming Daily, China Education Daily and Changjiang Daily have published 400 reports or above on its reform and development, and talent education. In 2020, Wuhan College ranked 6^th among private universities in China by Shanghai Ranking. In 2021, Wuhan College was the 3^rd among private universities in China University Alumni Association Ranking.
